Bio:
Fletcher Miller earned a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering at UC Berkeley in 1988 in the area of radiation heat transfer in participating media. After a 2 year research position in Germany, he worked for 16 years in the microgravity combustion program at NASA Glenn Research center studying the flammability of liquids and solids in the absence of gravity. Dr. Miller conducted several experiments on board unmanned rockets, flew many missions on the 0g aircraft, and performed many drops in the NASA Zero-G facility. He became the fire prevention lead for the fire safety program at NASA Glenn before moving to San Diego State University in 2007. At SDSU Dr. Miller has been working on an apparatus to simulate the flow conditions in microgravity to allow some experiments to be conducted on earth while still having microgravity relevance. Since joining the faculty he has collaborated closely with Prof. Bhattacharjee on flame measurements continuing research for NASA with the new apparatus and planned experiments on the International Space Station.
Professor Bhattacharjee, known by his friends as Sooby, earned a B.Tech. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in 1983 and his Ph.D. from Washington State University, Pullman, USA in 1988. After two years of post-doctoral work on a NASA project, he joined San Diego State University in 1991 and currently holds Professorship in Mechanical Engineering Department and Adjunct Professorship in Computer Science Department.
