SFPE San Diego April Meeting Update

Happy Spring SFPE SD Members,

Our Golf Tournament was a success and want to thank all our sponsors and those who participated on the beautiful Friday.

Our next meeting will be on TUESDAY April 10th. We will be holding a joint meeting with the San Diego Fire Protection Association! SFPE San Diego is pleased to announce that our speaker will be Matt Klaus from NFPA and will be presenting on the major updates to next edition of NFPA 13. Additionally, he will talk about some new certifications offered by NFPA for designers and engineers.

Matt Klaus – Principal Fire Protection Engineer, NFPA

Topic:

Matt will present on the major changes to the next edition of NFPA 13 and some new designer certificates provided by NFPA.

Bio:

Matt Klaus is a Principal Fire Protection Engineer at the National Fire Protection Association, where he is responsible for NFPA documents addressing commissioning, integrated system testing and automatic sprinkler systems. Mr. Klaus has extensive international fire protection engineering consulting experience where he was a project manager for projects in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, the Kingdom of Bahrain, Kenya, and Great Britain, as well as projects across the United States.  His experience includes designing and commissioning fire protection systems including smoke control systems, suppression systems and fire alarm systems.

Mr. Klaus holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering and a Master of Science Degree in Fire Protection Engineering, both from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Mr. Klaus is a member of the Salamander Honorary Fire Protection Engineering Society.

UPDATED SFPE SD Meeting Update – Thursday Feb 8, 2018

Hi SFPE SD Members,

The SFPE SD Chapter is pleased to announce that the speaker for our February meeting will be Nathan Wittasek from Simpson Gumpertz and Heger Inc to present “Up in Flames: An Examination of Exterior Façade Fires in High-Rise Buildings” at our February 8th Chapter meeting.

Nathan Wittasek, PE, CFEI, LEEP AP, CASp – Principal- Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, Inc

Topic:

The topic of the presentation will be on Up in Flames: An Examination of Exterior Façade Fires in High-Rise Buildings. This presentation provides an overview of some recent façade fires, U.S. fire testing and code requirements pertaining to combustible facades systems, as well as an overview of resources.  Make sure to   bring any relevant questions that you may have.

Bio:

Nate is a Principal and Vice President at Simpson Gumpertz & Heger, Inc.  Nate has twenty years of experience working in the fire protection and regulatory arenas.  Nate brings a practical approach to the fire protection engineering field that reflects his diverse training and experiences in academia, codes consulting for both new and existing facilities, performance-based fire protection engineering, accessibility, and the fire service.  His experience includes failure analysis, fire engineering, systems design and building codes consulting for commercial and infrastructure projects in North America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.  Nate has specialized in fire life safety systems and approaches that are used in assembly venues, tall buildings, cultural heritage facilities, and historic structures. Nate is a registered fire protection engineer in California and Nevada. He is a member of the Tall Building Fire Safety Network, the fire safety committee for the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, and is a regular instructor for the American Institute of Architects, where he focuses on regulatory issues, building, fire and zoning codes as well as accessibility.

Approved Technology for Corrosion Prevention in Dry and Preaction Type Fire Sprinkler Systems: Vacuum Technology” at our January 11th Chapter meeting.

Bio:

Gregg Vlahakis is a National Technical Representative for the Viking Corporation.

Gregg has been involved in the fire sprinkler industry for the past 35 years. After spending the first part of his career on the contracting side of the fire sprinkler industry, Gregg joined The Viking Corporation.

Gregg has represented the Viking Corporation for the past twenty seven years serving as a Territory Manager and a Technical Representative. Gregg’s responsibilities include educating both contractors and engineers in the Western United States on current Building and NFPA codes, fire sprinkler heads and devices and their application. As the National Technical Representative for Viking the past 17 years, Gregg has been responsible for the training and educating of  MEP firms, architects, consulting engineers, Fortune 500 company engineers, fire sprinkler contractors and fire protection authorities throughout the Western region of the United States and Canada. Gregg has conducted training seminars for various fire sprinkler associations and has served as Co-Chairman of the Southern California Chapter of the American Fire Sprinkler Association. Gregg sits on the NFPA 140 Committee and is a Professional Member on the National level of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers and has served on the board for the SFPE Southern California chapter for the past 10 years.

SFPE San Diego December Meeting – Cancelled

SFPE SD membership,

I wish to inform you that we will not be having a December meeting. With all of our busy schedules and the board has been focused on our own SFPE Golf Tournament for this year we decided that it would be best to cancel this months meeting.

We have some pretty exciting meetings and events for the new year. First, we are putting on our own golf tournament and we need your help. If you are interested in being a sponsor or golfing with us, please let one of the board members know. You can also visit our Golf Tournament tab on our website for more information.  We plan on hosting a joint meeting with the San Diego Fire Protection Association as well in the spring. Lastly, we are looking at presenting to students at either UCSD or SDSU to educate them about the field of Fire Protection Engineering.

Our next meeting going will be January 11th.

2017-2018 SFPE San Diego Chapter President Update

Dear Chapter Members and Sponsors,

I would like to welcome you to the San Diego and Imperial County Chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE). We are individuals in Southern California joined together using engineering, math, and science to protect people and property from fire and its effects in the built environment.

We begin the 2017-2018 year for our Chapter on the continued stride for excellence. As a Chapter we were recognized for Gold from the SFPE Board of Directors Award for Excellence. We strive for excellence, keeping our members involved, up to date on industry standards, and expanding our ever growing network of fire protection engineers/designers/AHJs in San Diego. In addition to keeping our members at the fore front of fire protection, we also are actively engaged with the increasing the awareness and need for fire protection engineers and fire safety in the built environment.

We hold monthly meetings as a means to exchange new and exciting information in the field of fire protection. Topics can include updates to building and fire codes, new technology, changes and trends, research projects, fire modeling, and many more. If there is a topic that you wish to learn more about this year, please email the board at [email protected]. Yearly, we hold a charity golf tournament to benefit the San Diego Burn Foundation. We also work with the Cal Poly SFPE Student Chapter.

Please join us! We invite designers, engineers, installers, governing officials, and any other individuals in the field of fire protection or fire safety to join our Chapter to further expand your network and knowledge.
