SFPE San Diego – THURSDAY April 18th Meeting

Hi SFPE SD Members,

Thank you all for attending our Annual Charity Golf Tournament, it wouldn’t have been a success without all your contributions and participation!

The SFPE SD Chapter is pleased to announce that the speaker for our April meeting will be Kelly Eisenstein Charles the Assistant Deputy Director and Chuck Siegmann the Senior Fire Protection Engineer in the Building Construction and Safety Division of the Development Services in the City of San Diego. They will be talking about recent changes to the City of San Diego Fire Protection related submittal procedures, publications, fees, interpretations, and current issues at our April 18th Chapter meeting. Be sure to bring all your questions!

Kelly Eisenstein Charles, P.E. – Assistant Deputy Director in Building Construction and Safety Division at City of San Diego

Chuck Siegmann III, PE – Senior Fire Protection Engineer in the Building Construction and Safety Division at the City of San Diego

Topic:

Changes to the City of San Diego Fire Protection related submittal procedures, publications, fees, interpretations, and current issues.

Bio:

Kelly Eisenstein Charles is the Assistant Deputy Director in the Building Construction and Safety Division of Development Services Department in the City of San Diego. Prior to working at the City, Kelly was the Operations Manager of the San Diego office of Rolf Jensen and Associates, Inc. She has been a working in the field of fire protection for the past 18 years after graduating University of Maryland’s Fire Protection Engineering program. Kelly is currently a member of the technical committee for smoke management systems for NFPA 92 and 204.

Chuck Siegmann is the Senior Fire Protection Engineer in the downtown office of the Building Construction and Safety Division of Development Services Department in the City of San Diego. Prior to working at the City, Chuck spent 30 years in the private sector working for fire protection consulting firms that included Hughes Associates Inc, TVA, Rolf Jensen and Associates, and Jensen Hughes. Chuck is a graduate of the University of Maryland Fire Protection Engineering program, and he is a past president of the San Diego/Imperial County SFPE Chapter.

Nanci Timmins – Chief Fire and Life Safety Officer at OSHPD

Topic:

Fire and Life Safety Updates at OSHPD which will include Fire Alarm in Hospitals, mid-cycle changes and other updates at OSHPD

Bio:

Nanci Timmins is the Chief Fire and Life Safety Officer at OSHPD. Nanci has 22 years in the fire industry. Prior to her position as a Chief Fire and Life Safety Officer and Fire and Life Safety Officer at OSHPD, she was a Fire Marshal for the State of Michigan. Nanci has certifications in NFPA and holds degrees in Psychology and Fire Science.

SFPE SD January 22nd Meeting Update

The SFPE SD Chapter is pleased to announce that the speaker for our January meeting will be Erik Taylor from Specified Technologies, Inc., to present “An Overview on Fire Stopping” at our January 22nd Chapter meeting.

Erik Taylor – Southern California Territory Manager – Specified Technologies, Inc. (STI)

Topic: The topic of the presentation will be “An Overview on Fire Stopping” This presentation will describe firestop applications and uses, the associated UL testing procedures and system reviews, proper installation, and the associated codes affecting fire stopping technology and requirements. Make sure to bring any relevant questions that you may have.

Bio:

Mr. Taylor has been working 26 Years in firestop industry as distributor and factory representative in Southern California. STI has been in firestop industry for 27 years and is second largest firestop manufacturer in the US, with over 2200 tested UL Systems.

Daniel N. Bak, PhD, PE, FSE – Sr. Forensic Fire Protection Consultant – Ivy Engineering, Inc.

Topic:The topic of the presentation will be “Overcoming Cultural Differences in Risk Assessment and Management: Lessons from the Practice of Fire Protection Engineering”. This presentation describes key aspects of the cultural differences between the Western/American and non-American (in this case, East Asian) ways of thinking, behaving, negotiating, and practicing engineering.  Make sure to bring any relevant questions that you may have.

Bio:

Presently, Daniel N. Bak is a Senior Forensic Fire Engineer at Ivey Engineering Inc.’s San Diego, California. Dr. Bak earned his Bachelor of Science from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Fire Protection and Safety Engineering.  After graduating, Dr. Bak then earned a Master of Science from Texas A&M University in Safety Engineering, and PhD in Industrial Engineering. He brings 37 years of cumulated experience in fire protection and performance-approach (fire and smoke modeling) in the testing and challenging environment of litigation.  Dr. Bak did practiced in New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, Japan, and Thailand where performance-based approaches are the norm.He has had extensive experience in Code Consultation and hands-on practice of designs of fire suppression, fire alarm, and mass notification systems globally.  Dr. Bak has combined his academic and practical experience to serve clients with best cost-effective fire engineering and risk solutions.  Dr. Bak is a past president of the SFPE Singapore Chapter.  Daniel is also an appointed Board Member at the SAME Orange County Post.
